Echocardiogram (ECHO)

An ECHO is an ultrasound scan of the heart which shows the pumping function and valves. It is a very useful test to identify the reason behind a murmur or shortness of breath, as well as looking at diseases of the heart muscle itself.  This test involves placing a probe on the chest and bouncing sound waves inside the body to form a picture of the heart.  It can take up to 30 mins and is painless.

Sometimes a contrast solution is given through a vein to see whether there is a hole in the heart or any blood clots. Our state of the art dedicated cardiac scanner allows us to investigate synchronicity of the two sides of the heart and also complex valve problems.
